Missed William Heath on R4’s Today Programme? Hear more at Socitm 2010

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Socitm 2010 speaker William Heath was on form when interviewed for Friday’s Today Programme about the closure of the ContactPoint database. Having explained the confidentiality issues inherent in a database of 12m records accessible to around 300,000 people, he was then asked by John Humphries: ‘surely if you’ve got nothing to hide, being on a public database isn’t a problem’ (or words to that effect). ‘Anyone who hasn’t got anything to hide isn’t living life properly…….’ came the quickfire response. Read more about William Heath’s objections to large government databases and something about his work on better ways of sharing personal information (his topic at Socitm 2010) in his blog and come along and hear more at Socitm 2010.

Controversial Metropolitan Police chief to address Socitm 2010

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Socitm is delighted to have secured the former Metropolitan Police chief Lord Blair of Boughton as the opening, keynote speaker at this year’s conference.

Lord Blair, whose life peerage was announced in the dissolution honours list, was Commissioner between 2005 and 2008, where he presided over a string of controversies, including the accidental shooting of Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes. While Ken Livingstone was mayor, Sir Ian received strong support, but this was not forthcoming from his successor, and Sir Ian Blair left the Met in December 2008 citing differences with Boris Johnson as a key factor.
